Spotlight: John Cassady, club charter member |
 |
John
Cassady, a charter member of the Rotary
Club of Casselberry passed away on June
26, 2003. It was a great loss for the club.
John had been president from 1980-1981
and for thirty one years he and his wife
Betty "served above self." In an interview
held for a newsletter article in May 2002,
John recalls the year of 1975 when the
club was initially chartered. "We were
a bunch of lively guys, live wires...we
heckled the president and laughed heartily
at our meetings. A visitor to our club
might have thought we were just having
fun, which we did, but we were also doing
a lot of work." John Cassady may be looking
down at us today with a smirk on his face.
He and Betty and three children came down
from Cincinnati and during a period of
ten years, John established the biggest
fund raiser the club has ever had - the "Possum
Flats & Eastern Railroad." This was
miniature railroad on his eighteen acres
next to Lake Howell which carried thousands
upon thousands of school children on a
grand two-mile ride for a small fee. The
proceeds went directly to the club's Foundation.
Hank (and sometimes Walt) often blows the "Possum
Flats" whistle at our meetings reminding
us of a great Rotarian - John Cassady.

|
|
She's
been a reporter, anchor, producer and
photographer. What Julie loves most though,
is weather! She has earned the National
Weather Association Seal of Approval.
And, she is going to tell us how we will
fare in this hurricane season. Julie
completed the Broadcast Meteorology program
at Mississippi State University, and
received a degree in Psychology from
Indiana University. She grew up in Louisville,
Kentucky, and got her first internship
at WHAS-TV in her hometown. That internship
led to a job in West Virginia, then Evansville,
Indiana. Julie came to News 13 from Chicagoland
TV (CLTV).
