  • Member Spotlight: Cathleen Cresswell
    Kathleen Cresswell

Cathleen is a member of Flamenco del Sol – a flamenco dance company that performs throughout Central Florida. Not long ago, she gave us a short performance of her new passion and as she puts it “I always dreamed of being an actress.”

Cathleen’s birthplace is Cambridge, Mass. Her family lived right across the street from Harvard U. She recalls the many summers she spent visiting family in New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada (her father was Canadian). After taking her bachelors degree from Maryland U she followed her family tradition of serving in the armed forces. She joined the Navy where she spent the next twenty years “being in the lights” by taking assignments which put her in front of an audience – Nuclear Weapons Release Training, Intelligence Briefing, Public Affairs.

While stationed in Korea, she (her own words) “met a sexy Green Beret Lieutenant Colonel named John Cresswell (still waters run deep).” They have been married for over twenty years.

Cathleen was first invited to join Rotary in Virginia where she was last stationed by a Rotarian who was in her aerobics class. Fortunately for us, when she and John moved here, she visited the Rotary Club of Casselberry and never left. Bob Walker was her sponsor. Besides being a past president of the club, Cathleen has served as secretary, program manager, Community Avenue of service chair and many other duties

Besides Rotary and the Flamenco dance company, Cathleen keeps a tight schedule with among other things - giving speeches on the American Flag and a lay reader at St. Richard’s Episcopal Church. She further adds “John and I are devoted to our three cats.”

Our speaker this week: J. Stephen Brooks - Storyteller

    J. Stephen Brooks was born in Alabama and grew up in Florida and after a stint in the Air Force; he finished his education with a masters in English (teaching composition).

In a prior life, Stephen has been an adjunct English instructor, a director of sales & marketing, a traffic manager and entrepreneur. Today, he says that “while coming close to the end of the rainbow but never quite finding it, he is content to wait until he rounds a corner one day and runs slap into that pot of gold.”

Today, Stephen is a speaker, emcee and a professional storyteller of “original stories – told in a voice and style of a Southern Humorist.” He will be spinning for us a great yarn which most likely involves his southern heritage. He currently resides in Winter Park. Maybe we will find out what the “J” stands for in his name.
