Member Spotlight: Ben Celones ![]()
Ben’s place of birth is Manila, Philippines and he states it happened “long, long time ago.” When he came to the United States in 1959 he lived in Riverside, CA for two years then headed east and lived in Chicopee Falls, MA for five years, then Cleveland, OH for thirteen years and finally Orlando for the past twenty six years.
Ben received a Bachelor degree in Architecture from Ohio State. He stayed on with his first employer and on his behalf ended up moving to Orlando to open an office for that company. After having worked for someone else for thirty years, he decided to become an entrepreneur and set up his own company with other partners – MRI Architectural Group, Inc. They now boast two offices – Orlando and Cocoa Beach with a staff of twenty five. They take on all types of architectural projects (except schools).
Presently Ben holds six active registrations in his field of expertise and is registered practitioner of his trade with all states except California and New York.
Ohio State also has a special niche in Ben’s heart. This is where he met the love of his life, Terry when he was a sophomore and she was a freshman. They have three children and four grandchildren. Their older daughter and son live in Orlando and their youngest just moved to Charlotte, NC.
Why did he choose to join Rotary? Ben states “I joined Rotary for the humanitarian spirit of the organization of service above self.” His sponsor was Ron Ange whom recently came back to the club and Ben sponsored him.
He joined the Rotary Club of Casselberry in 1990 and became its president in 1993. Ben has chaired the community avenue of service, the international avenue of service, has served as governor’s aide (for PDG Jim McGann), served on the District’s Permanent Fund Committee and the District Rotary Foundation Committee. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow and a Permanent Fund Benefactor.
Ben was also instrumental in getting the Rotary Park a reality through the many weeks of “Rotary (work) Parties” at the park. He was the person who drew the architectural plans for its construction. In most recent years, Ben and Terry have also led the Rotary team in preparing special meals at the Coalition for the Homeless.
