    Fred and Ruth Gaines

Frederic F. Gaines Jr., was born in Syracuse, New York, lived in Connecticut and eventually moved to St. Fernandina, Florida in 1946

Fred recollects: “I met Ruth (his wife) in the 5th grade and we graduated together, however we never dated until 1955. We were married in 1957 while I was in the US army.” They are proud grandparents of three grand kids (one is already twenty one and the youngest is 4) from their two children, Elizabeth and Frederic III.

Fred has been retired from his profession for a handful of years. He started his profession as undertaker in a local funeral home in 1952 as an apprentice and then while in the army he was in the Mortuary System stationed in Italy. After the Army, Fred attended mortuary school in Syracuse, NY, became licensed in the State of Florida in 1961 and worked in Jacksonville for the next 9 years.

In 1969, Fred and Ruth moved to Sanford to open a funeral home in Longwood. In 1985 he bought out his partner and ran the funeral home as a sole proprietor until 1993 and managed it for the next five

He came to Rotary in a roundabout way. While living in Jacksonville, Fred joined the Meninak Club, a service club founded as an outgrowth of Rotary. When he moved to Sanford he was asked to join the Sanford Rotary Club and in 1975 after attempting to sponsor a club in Longwood and co-founding the Lake Mary Club, Fred join the fledging Rotary Club of Casselberry being organized by the South Seminole Club.

Fred has held practically every single club office and chair and went on to help on the District level as District Representative (now called Assistant District Governor) as well as chair the District’s 3H program.

When asked how he feels about Rotary, he says “I have always felt that Rotary was and is a great place for men to get together and do good works for the community, and for the world as a whole.”
