  • Counting calories to survive: How Rotary is making a difference
    Niger

A youngster receives a food ration in Niger

Niger, the world's poorest nation, sits on the edge of the ever-encroaching Sahara desert. Theres only a thin strip of fertile land here; the rest consists of rock, red dirt, or desert sand.

Each year, Niger suffers a season of hunger, when all the grain has been consumed but the harvest hasnt come in yet. And each year, the country slides even further into poverty. In September 2005, a food crisis struck the vulnerable nation. Nearly a third of the country's 12 million people faced starvation.

Most of the world has long since moved on to other crises. But not Rotary. In 2005-06, Rotarians worldwide contributed more than US$700,000 for humanitarian efforts in Niger, much of it for long- term, sustainable aid that will end the annual cycle of hunger

Cultural scholar Bram Fiebelkorn visits the club
    Bram Fiekelhorn

Bram Fiebelkorn gave us an insight into his experience in Venezuela in the fall of 2001 as a Cultural Scholar.
Besides learning about the culture, language and literature, his involvement led him to teach music therapy at a mental institution.
He is within the next two weeks embarking on a new experience as a Rotary Scholar with Panama as his home for a period of a year.
Bram has promised to keep in touch with us and come back and talk to us about his experience ther.
