  • The history behind Vocational Service
    Paul Harris

Paul Harris original intent was to bring together a circle of business and professional acquaintances. The classification principle became the guideline by which nearly all Rotary membership is determined - assures that each club has among its members a cross-section of a community's vocations.
For the first 80 years, the Vocational Avenue of Service was primarily the responsibility of each individual Rotarian. The emphasis was on the personal contributions that Rotarians could make within their own workplaces and the keeping of high ethical standards in an individual's profession.
In the past 20 years after the Council on Legislation adopted the "Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions", it has been expanded to projects and vocational service awards (such as the Karcher Award) to specific professions which allow Rotarians to share their expertise with the community and/or acknowledge a member in the community for the same ideals.

On Wednesday October 18 at the City of Casselberry City Hall, the Rotary Club of Casselberry will give a Service Above Self award to a public safety officer in the Greater Casselberry area.
This event is one way that the club promotes high ethical standards in a very much needed occupation of our community.
Tell your friends, business acquaintances and family to join you for our regular breakfast meeting. Don't forget to wear your new Rotary shirt!

    • In 1989, a revised statement on ethical behavior was adopted by the Council on Legislation. What is the name of this document?
    • The 4-Way Test began in 1932 as a simple test of ethics. Who devised it?
    • Classifications are determined by activities or services to society rather than by the position held by a particular individual. True or False?
    • What was Paul Harris's profession?

    Answers in red below
If you score 4 or 5 -- you are really good. If you score 2 or 3 --- you need to read. If you score 1 --- it was a pretty good guess. If you score 0 --- it's impossible.
