  • The Bird Flu: It is not if, it's when
    Avian flu

Rebecca Sebren, American Red Cross disaster coordinator in Central Florida brought us a sobering reminder of the pandemic which will affect us in the future.
She gave us an excellent overview of the immediacy of the pandemic and how it could affect our daily lives.
Other than getting innoculated now with the flu vaccine, Rebecca gave us the following tips to prevent (not avoid) the flu:

    • Wash your hands often and long enough to destroy the bacteria (sing Happy Birthday twice)
    • Cover coughs and sneezes (into your arm and not your hands)
    • Stay away from others as much as possible (be a little bit of a hermit)
    • Stay home if you get infected - don't jeopardize others

Gift of Life child, Renolia has a bright future
    Renolia - Gift of Life

The seven year old from Belize came last week with the hope of going back home to live a normal life.
Last Thursday she was operated at Arnold Palmer Hospital and within hours, Renolia was given the gift of life.
The Rotary Club of Casselberry was one of several clubs in the district who supported this project monetarily. Renolia is the first child to be received by the Rotarians in Orlando.
Marty Kramer, Gift of Life chair with the encouragement of Past District Governor Micki Kaye has been the inspiration to make this program take- off.
Renolia's mom who came with her daughter cannot begin to express her deepest thanks to all involved for allowing her daughter to live and make their stay here in Orlando "a dream."

    Ivan Mao in Sweden

Ivan and wife Celia visited the Rotary Club of Umeå Sødra. The picture shows him receiving the Rotary banner of the club from its president, Margareta Olsson.
He reports "Umeå is a city in northern Sweden, which has 5 Rotary clubs. This one, Umeå Sødra (south), has 91 members, which is supposedly a typical size of the hundreds of clubs in Sweden."
"They meet on Fridays for very stylish lunches in this gorgeous palace-like restaurant, which was converted from old courthouse. That afternoon (10/25/06) was 25 degrees outside and snowing, beautiful."
